Know Your African History!

Whats Up 5/Fifths family

"On this Day of April 16....."

Several important events took place on this day including:

A great man and basketball legend in Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor "aka" Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as most of common America knows him was born in 1947. Although Kareem was a standout at the University of California Los Angeles, he shocked many when he came into the NBA and became the league's leading scorer and lead the Lakers to five Championships.

Also on this date, while in jail for demonstrating, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote the "Letter From Birmingham Jail" in 1965. King wrote this letter because he was responding to eight white clergy men from Alabama who admitted that social injustices still were around but they should be fought through the court room and not the streets. King disagreed believing that civil rights could not be won without nonviolent protests and direct action. King stated that "not only was civil disobedience justified in the face of unjust laws, but that "one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws." (King -Letter from Birmingham Jail)

Thats all from ya boy T.O.
